The diagnosis of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder has very low reliability. This means that experts often cannot agree on who does or does not have a deficit disorder. The diagnosis of ADHD can negatively impact a child's academic performance. 50-70 percent of academic success is dependent on factors such as persistence and motivation. When a child or an adult is led to believe that they lack the internal resources for success, it encourages a "why try?" attitude that undermines academic performance.
People with ADD/ADHD exhibit too little Beta (thinking) activity and too much Theta (dreaming) activity. This is the classic inattention of ADD. With ADHD, hyperactivity keeps people from falling asleep. In essence, the person is combating the high Theta activity and keeping themselves aroused (by increasing their Beta activity).
